The IELTS TEST
There are two different IELTS tests - The General Test and The Academic Test.
The tests only differ in terms of reading and writing.
The Format
Listening
Reading

Speaking
- 30 minutes - 4 audios (10 questions each) - 40 points
- 60 minutes - 40 questions - 40 points
- Academic - 3 passages
- General - 3 sections - 1. Two or three short texts; 2. Two texts; 3. One long text
- 60 minutes - 2 tasks
- Task 1 (Counts half as much as Task 2) - At least 150 words (20 minutes max)
- Academic - Describe a graph, figure, table, etc.
- General - Write a letter in response to a situtaion
-Task 2 - Write an essay - At least 250 words (40 minutes max)
- 11 to 14 minutes - 3 parts
- 1. Introduction - (4 -5 minutes) - Identity and familiar topics
- 2. Long Part - (3 - 4 minutes) - Talk for 2 minutes about a topic (Given a card with points to discuss)
- 3. Discussion - (4-5 minutes) - Discuss the topic in part 2.
CK English Method for IELTS
The teachers at CK English have helped many students get the IELTS score they need. The method isn't rocket science... practice makes perfect when using the correct strategy. First we'll teach you the strategy for each question - mostly for writing and speaking. Then we'll practice it so that you are confident and comfortable with the test.
Listening
Practice makes perfect! We will practice a listening activity every class. The strategy is to use the time given to look at the kind of answers you can expect to fill in.

Reading
Again this is all about practice. The IELTS reading texts are not particularly difficult, but you do need to be able to read quickly. We will not do much reading in class as it is not the most productive way to spend your time in class. We have a lot of resources available for you to practice at home. If you do not practice at home it will be necessary to practice during the class. If you have any doubts about anything in the reading activities you are welcome to ask your teacher during the class.
Below are examples of reading activities, but we will not do a reading activity in this experimental class.
Writing
We will explain how to approach each writing topic with a template to make it easier for you to write correctly, quickly and with enough words. Task 1 is different in the academic and general tests but task 2 is pretty much the same. Below are examples of Task 1 for the General and Academic Tests and Task 2. Once you are given the strategy of how to approach each task it will be up to you to complete the writing activities at home and we will check and discuss your mistakes and where improvements can be made.
Below are examples of what you might recieve, but we will not go into it in the experimental class.
Academic
General
Task 1: The graph below shows the consumption of spreads from 1981 to 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.
You will move to a new city for work. You know some people who live there.
In your letter,
- Ask them for help finding accommodation
- Tell them where you would like to live
- Tell them the type of place you are looking for
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
General & Academic Test
Task 2: Write an essay about the following:
Overpopulation is the world's most serious environmental problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Speaking
Most of the class will be focused towards speaking. After giving you strategies for handling the different tasks we will work on trying to improve your speaking by practicing task 2 and task 3. We will correct your English and give you ways to try to improve your speaking. Tips, tips and more tips.
We will also have a few vocabulary exercises to help you improve your vocabulary. We will not focus on grammar activities in class, but if we notice that there is a certain grammar issue or a mistake that you are making quite often we will include some activities to help fix the problem.
Let's take a look at some of the questions you can expect to see in the test and in our classes. Let's try them now in the experimental class as if it were the test.
Task 1: Introduction
What’s your name? Could you spell it for me?
Task 2: You have 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak about the following.
Describe a friend that you often spend time with:
You should say:
- How often you see this friend
- Where you usually go together
- What things you do together
And say why you like spending time with this person
A tip for this task is to try to use present perfect in the opening sentence and an expression. This shows a good first impression and sets up the rest of the two minute speech quite well.
For example, "To be perfectly honest, I haven't had much time to spend with anyone at the moment that's mostly to all the craziness that has been going on recently. My life has been a little bit of a nightmare recently. But one friend that I used to spend a lot of time with in the past and probably spend more time with today than anyone else is my friend Tom. I met Tom in... so have know him for..." So after introducing the topic using expressions and present perftect you can start talking about the other points on the card.
Task 3: Discussion
Do you think that social media is making us more social or less social?
A tip for this task is to "buy time" to give us time to think... so you could reply with something like "That is a really good question and I havent really given it much thought before, but I would say that social media is making us..."
